And to be fair, just about every journalist does this kind of thing. I don't think it's necessarily bad -- any journalist worth his or her salt will work hard to find people who can make good points and actually have something to say to add to the story but it is true that for many people (myself included when I was in the industry) this bland, rote approach is the norm.
It's a reminder to me that it's the substance, not the form, that helps make for vivid writing.
