Just noticed that the old guy in the photo for "Oont, Part XI" has some kind of band or strap on that's plastic, with a plastic clasp. Not quite as unadorned as I hoped to make Brother Matthew appear. Well, scratch that out as an anachronism. Guess that's what I get for illustrating the story via photos stolen from the Internet.

It does remind me of a bit from Steve Martin's book "Cruel Shoes:"
A sense of humor about his collection is Martin's most likable quality. Not free from the pitfall that plagues all art collectors -- fakes -- Martin discovered one of his Primitives, supposedly painted in seventeen sixty-five, was not all it was supposed to be. Martin pointed it out himself when he noticed the sitter was wearing a Seiko watch. Martin's response was typical: "Well, all the more primitive!"
That makes me feel a little better.
